We also recommend visiting the NetAlert website. NetAlert is a federal government website providing information for a safe online environment for all families. The website has useful information on protecting your family online and has links to free content filtering software.
For more experienced Internet users try McAfee's Site Advisor this tool is a free browser plugin (Internet Explorer & Firefox compatible) that identifies sites that are know for spyware acting as a preventive measure.
Spam Filtering
In this day and age most Internet users would have come across 'spam', or unsolicited emails. While Amnet webmail services do have built in spam protection, if you are using a POP 3 email account we recommend spam protection software. Here are some links to commonly used spam filtering software that will aid in spam elimination.
As another alternative why not install the anti-spam service SpamMATTERS, developed by the Australian Communications Media Authority (ACMA) the software deletes spam and reports it to ACMA at the same time.
(Please note: Amnet recommends these software packages but we do not endorse any of the products listed, nor do we guarantee their effectiveness)
Scams and Hoaxes
To safeguard yourself from scams and hoaxes we recommend you treat any suspicious emails, which originate from unknown email addresses, with caution and to be safe delete them immediately. Suspicious emails include those that promise you money, good health, "bedroom solutions" or a solution to
all your problems.
Also be wary of any email that asks for personal or bank details, especially those claiming to be Amnet.
Amnet would never ask for personal information or financial information in an email.
How to avoid online scams and hoaxes We recommend deleting any suspicious emails that:
- ask for banking details or personal information
- promise any sort of financial gain
- present fanciful stories explaining how you can share in forgotten millions dollars fortunes
- offer job opportunities with no need for qualifications in exchange for bank account details for money transfers
